Device Use and Care
It’s recommended that you hold the device ¼” from the skin’s surface or directly on the skin if you wish. For our handheld products, hold the device steady on the treatment area for the recommended time. When using our hands free products, keep the device stationary for each treatment cycle.
Treatment times vary by device and application. We recommend 3 minutes per treatment area for acne and wrinkle reduction light therapy treatments. Pain recovery devices will vary between 14 and 25 minutes, depending on the device and target treatment. Oral health care varies from 10 minutes to 20 minutes depending on the application. Consult the instructions that come with the product before use. Contact our customer care specialists for additional information.
- Turn device off and unplug from any power source.
- Do not clean the LED lights with any liquid or damp cloth. Use an air blower device like a blow dryer or compressed air duster (keyboard cleaner) to remove particles and dust from LEDs.
- Clean device exterior with damp cloth or rubbing alcohol.
- Allow to dry completely prior to use.
The lights (LEDs) you are not seeing are in the infrared (I/R) spectrum and are not visible to the human eye. In devices with a combination of infrared LEDs and other red or blue lights, you will see the red and amber LEDs, but you will not be able to see the infrared lights. Some cellphone cameras and high-speed digital cameras are able to pick up on the LEDs in this spectrum. By using one of those devices, you may be able to see them.
Test yourself for light sensitivity prior to initial treatment:
- Power on device.
- Place device on or no more than ¼” from the skin on your forearm for 3 minutes.
- After 3 minutes, check the area. If area has turned red and lasts for more than 2 hours, your skin is light sensitive.
- Discontinue use and contact Customer Service at 1 (800) 337-9565.
If used regularly, your blue light device will help destroy bacteria that causes acne. When acne flares up, light therapy can be used for spot treatments as well as long-term care for larger areas of the face, back, or body. The efficacy of blue light therapy for mild-to-moderate facial acne was researched in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
It is recommended that you use your acne treatment device for 3 minutes per treatment area. Hold the light therapy device steady and 1⁄4” from the skin’s surface (or directly on the skin if you wish). When using our “hands free” light therapy device, keep the device stationary (without moving) for each treatment cycle. Once the time expires, move to the next treatment area. Avoid pointing the light directly at your eyes. Use goggles for extra protection.
Yes, the device can make direct contact with your skin. At minimum, it should be 1⁄4” from the skin’s surface or closer. It will never get too warm to be uncomfortable.
When using the acne device (blue LEDs) around the eye area, we recommend that you use some type of eye protection for example tanning goggles. Additionally, the blue lights can be very bright, so we recommend that your eyes are closed during treatments on the face or near the eyes.
For acne treatments using blue light therapy, you will see results fairly quickly. Sometimes after a single treatment. For severe acne breakouts, the number of treatments will increase due to the bacteria levels. Users will start seeing overall skin condition improve as well as diminished breakouts, redness, and irritation of the skin due to acne. It is recommended that you use the light therapy device regularly to keep acne causing bacteria at bay.
Based on reVive Light Therapy’s own ten (10) week clinical study, 100% of the participants saw improvement in 3 to 4 of the following areas:
- Reduction of pores

If you just started using red light therapy for anti-aging treatments, you may want to start off with once a day use, and do that for perhaps the first 45-60 days. After that you may continue to use the system daily, or you may decrease it to 2-3 times per week, or even less, such as once per week, depending on works for you and your schedule.
Everyone’s skin is different and will experience different benefits when using red light therapy. However, the efficacy of red light therapy for reducing wrinkles and other signs of aging, such as fine lines, skin roughness, and low collagen density, was researched in the Photomedicine and Laser Surgery journal.
For anti-aging applications, we recommend to leave the system on one treatment area for 3 minutes. Holding the device steady and not moving around. After 3 minutes you will move to the next treatment area. Many customers start with a small product like Glō by reVive Light Therapy® and move up.
The light therapy system for anti-aging does not have any harmful UV rays and it will not cause damage to the skin or eyes. The system is safe to use around the eye area as well.
Studies show no harmful effects to the eyes when using red light therapy. The LEDs are bright, however; it is preferred that your eyes are closed while using the device around the eye area. Never look directly at the lights when the system is turned on. Optional goggles are provided for your use.
Yes, the device can make direct contact with face. For maximum benefits, don’t hold it further away than 1⁄4” from the skin’s surface.
Yes. If you have any concerns we recommend consulting your physician or primary care professional.
Wrinkle-reduction light therapy devices can be used alone or with skin care products such as peptides and hyaluronic acids. Many skin care professionals and estheticians have found that by combining light therapy with peptides, hyaluronic acid, green tea, and white tea, they are able to achieve increased results.
You should avoid products containing retinol or light activated ingredients while using the device, however. It is recommended to use such products after your treatment.
It is also recommended to use the system on a clean face first. When introducing light therapy to your skin, we recommend that you do a skin sensitivity test and use the device without a topical products or creams to determine how your skin responds to the light therapy.
If using a red light therapy device, makeup will need to be removed. Light therapy penetrates below the skin’s surface. Many beauty products contain SPF sunscreen, which will block the penetration of the LEDs.

We use a medical grade soft silicone. This makes the device comfortable to wear during treatment sessions.
Unlike a heating pad, light therapy works underneath the skins surface, penetrating a 1” to 1”1 ½” below the skin’s surface. Light therapy assists with pain relief by increasing blood circulation, relaxing muscles, and reducing spasms.
There are many studies that show how light therapy works for pain relief, including a NASA study that confirmed their light therapy devices reduced painful side effects from radiation and chemotherapy. Health professionals such as doctors, rehab facilities, therapists, and chiropractors already use light therapy for pain on patients in clinical settings. The efficacy of infrared light therapy for chronic low back pain was studied in the journal Pain: Research and Management.
Many people will experience reduced pain after the first use, but depending on different factors it could take many days of multiple treatments to feel the pain reduction.
Some of the factors that impact results are the type of pain, source of pain, medications, location on body, and person’s age. We encourage users to set their expectation levels at a reasonable point and to be realistic about what they are trying to accomplish.
We recommend the use of pain cream products after your treatment. Oil based creams or those with metallic ingredients, like zinc, block light and will make the treatment ineffective. Use of these products prior to light therapy treatment can also make it difficult to clean the device.
Users of the dpl® pain device should treat their pain areas for 14 to 25 minutes, depending on the severity of their problem. The system may be used multiple times per day, with cooling times between sessions.
Unlike a heating pad where you will feel a lot of heat and warmth on the skin’s surface, the infrared LEDs in our light therapy devices work under the skin’s surface. The infrared LEDs cause the system to warm the skin gently, however. This is normal, and the device is designed to handle this.
The dpl® pain device is designed with the back pain sufferer in mind and can be easily used and worn with the adjustable strap on the flex pad or the handheld device. The device is lightweight and comfortable to wear. Treatment should focus on the main back pain area until pain relief and mobility is obtained before moving on to other areas of the body.
If your pain problem has developed over several years and is considered chronic, it may take multiple daily treatments to start reducing pain. The system is not intended to replace any current medication prescribed by your physician. Always consult your physician if the pain persists or intensifies. This may be a symptom of other conditions needing immediate attention.
Yes, the light therapy design will help with minor pain and inflammation on most areas of the body, including sore muscles and tendons, tissue pain, or inflammation.
Light therapy pain devices can be used for the treatment of chronic pain by emitting energy in the Near-IR spectrum for the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, arthritis and muscle spasm, and stiffness while promoting relaxation of muscle tissue and temporarily increase of local blood circulation where applied.
The light therapy device can be laid directly on the skin’s surface. You will feel warmth when using the device, but unlike a heating pad it is working under the skin’s surface to increase circulation and stimulate muscle to relieve soreness. For the best results, you will want to allow the light therapy device to have air circulate while you are using it.
The dpl® Oral Care light therapy system uses infrared, blue, and red light. Various studies have shown the efficacy of LED lights for various aspects of oral health. A study shared by the US National Library of Medicine showed how LED lights killed periodontal pathogens. Non-UV blue lights have also been shown by the American Chemical Society to be a safer but still effective method for teeth whitening with whitening treatments, a finding repeated by major dental product suppliers.
Treatment time is 20 minutes. The device will automatically shut off after 10 minutes. (Each treatment requires two 10-minute sessions). Use with a teeth whitening gel of your choice. For the first week, depending on your whitening gel strength and teeth sensitivity, use once or twice daily (treatments can be back-to-back). After the first week, use 2-3 times per week or as needed. Helpful hint for teeth whitening: for maximum results, put gel directly on teeth instead of on a tray.
Pull apart the device and install the waterproof silicone or cover the USB connection with your finger to avoid water (moisture) from getting inside the controller. Wash the mouthpiece in lukewarm water and then let the device air dry. Remove the waterproof silicon cleaning cover before using.
The battery indicator will blink on the controller of the dpl® Gum Device. The key to using the device is to make sure the LEDs on the mouth tray light up. If you are not able to see the LEDs that is an indication that the device needs to be charged.
To turn on the device, press and hold the on/off button for 2 seconds or until the LED lights on the mouth tray light up. The device will shut off automatically after 10 minutes. This time may vary based on the battery level. Charging typically takes 4-6 hours but may take longer.
The device works with most teeth whitening products. You can purchase teeth whitening products at stores or online. The brand or type of teeth product will vary person to person. For example, teeth sensitivity to topicals may determine which product works best for each individual.
We use medical grade soft silicone. You may purchase additional mouth trays by calling 800.337.9565 or emailing Customer Support at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Yes, because we use medical grade soft silicone, it is safe to use your device with dentures or other dental implants or othodontics.
